Births, Deaths, Marriages, and Relationships Registration Act 2021
Conversion Practices Prohibition Legislation Act 2022 Defines conversion as sustained effort or treatment that intends changing or suppressing the individual’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. The Act specifies a set of exclusions:
(ii) complies with all legal, professional, and ethical standards when taking the action; or
The Act also amends the Human Right Act 1993 to insert a section making conversion practices unlawful and to allow a complaint to be made under the Human Rights Act 1993 if the section has been breached. Sentencing Act 2002 While there is no specific hate crime or hate speech law in New Zealand Section 9 of the Sentencing Act 2002 lists aggravating factors that should be taken into account when sentencing or otherwise dealing with an offender.
